Bán, S. Szabó & Partners was established in the beginning of 1997 as a result of the reorganization of the Budapest office of Shearman & Sterling.
Shearman & Sterling, one of the world's leading global law firms, was actively involved in Hungarian transactions since 1989 and formally opened its Budapest office in 1991. During the years that followed, the Budapest office participated in some of the largest privatizations in Hungary in the fields of banking, telecommunications, oil and gas utilities and other industrial areas including food processing, pharmaceuticals and agro-chemicals. It also participated in foreign inward investment and financing projects and provided general corporate advice in all areas of law to clients doing business in Hungary. Bán, S. Szabó & Partners, to whom Shearman & Sterling transferred its Hungarian practice as of January 1, 1997, continued to operate, essentially with the same lawyers who worked for the Budapest office of Shearman & Sterling before the reorganization, in cooperation with Shearman & Sterling until the end of 1999.
